In late October 2022, against all advice from friends, Jordanians and embassies, two travellers set off in a shared taxi to cross the desert from Amman to Baghdad. They had no visa for Iraq, no map, no hotel booked in Baghdad. Their motivating goal was to visit the Ziggurat of Ur, somewhere south of Baghdad, though even that was not clear. They had no idea what lay ahead. Living on the edge, they encountered magnificent historical sites, were overwhelmed by the extraordinary hospitality and generosity of the Iraqi people and learned manifold lessons in perseverance and humility.
